Endoscopic OCT

Optical coherence tomography is a technology that provides structural information of biological samples.

An OCT has been developed under the PICCOLO project achieving an axial and lateral resolution of 10 µm each. This resolution was achieved using an endoscope probe developed by the consortium and that is capable of scanning a sample with a field of view of 300 µm. The probe is designed to operate at the far end of an endoscope working channel.

Ex-vivo imaging sessions with tissue samples are being performed in a clinical setting. The cross-sectional images are recorded, and image post-processing is applied with the aim of detecting patterns to aid the detection of polyp cancers. This process shall be automated by creating a database with the images provided by the OCT system.
